The body of the harpsichord is shaped like a wing. There are two or more strings to each note-and the player can vary how many are used at one time. This makes loud and soft sounds possible on the instrument. Some later instruments use ‘swell’ device. This opens slats (shutters) in the body of the instrument, allowing the sound to ‘swell’ out.
